Artist Statement

In 1928 the German literary critic Walter Benjamin wrote in his essay, The Cultural History of Toys, that, “Children do not constitute a community cut off from everything else…their toys can- not bear witness to any autonomous separate existence, but rather are a silent signifying dialogue between them [children] and their nation.” This is not only true for toys (of which much of my work is concerned), but for all manner of objects – artifacts – from our collective past that are formed and fabricated by human hands and intentions. This is the realm in which I work and play, and seek to understand my culture and history.

Biography

I was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1964. We moved around a bit as dad sought his path; Kansas, Michigan, Iowa –then two years in Barcelona until 1971 when we finally settled in rural Oregon in a tiny town named Pratum, where I grew up. My entire childhood and young adulthood was a collaboration of hand and mind. I worked in the auto-body industry, on farms, in retail and in other industries, but I never ceased to read voraciously – I have always loved a good story and imagined that that is how we most wish to live our lives – as if ours too is worth telling and living. In my mid 30s, with my wife’s urging, I finally attended University and the art department soon became my home and artist subsequently my identity. I now have a cavernous, industrial studio in Wichita, filled with tools and parts and potential –but I am still the same storyteller I’ve been since my childhood. I still read daily and I’ve yet to find anything more apropos to my path than the following quote from Albert Camus:

“A man’s work is nothing but this slow trek to rediscover, through the detours of
art, those two or three great and simple images in whose presence his heart first
opened.”
